Helen,
Who holds the financial power in your relationship?
A woman can earn most of the household income while her partner makes the major financial decisions.
She may manage the bills and household expenses while her partner decides how the family will invest, build wealth, or prepare for the future.
There is nothing wrong with this arrangement when both partners have consciously chosen it and both have an equal voice.
The problem begins when a woman does not feel that she has an equal say.
Some women feel they need permission before spending money, investing in themselves, or pursuing something they desire.
Asking for that permission can bring up embarrassment, guilt, or fear.
Money often reveals the power differences that already exist within a relationship.
This has a cultural and historical context.
In the United States, it was only in 1974 that federal law prohibited creditors from discriminating against women based on their sex or marital status.
In Uganda, where I was born, inheritance law was amended in 2022 to strengthen equal inheritance rights for women and men.
For generations, women received the message that financial authority belonged to men.
These messages are passed through families, cultures, laws, and lived experiences. They can shape what our nervous systems expect and how much financial authority we allow ourselves to hold.
During Rewire Your Financial Worry, we will explore the thoughts, emotions, and past experiences that influence how we respond to money today.
My intention is to create a sacred, safe space where we can have honest conversations about our financial worries with care and without judgment.
I bring 14 years of experience as a psychotherapist and five years as a coach to this work. I know how to hold difficult conversations with empathy and help women explore what is happening without shame.
Bring your financial worries.
