Helen,

  • A 2025 survey of women found that 60% currently carry credit card debt — up from 55% just three years earlier.
  • Nearly 1 in 10 women carry credit card balances over $7,500, and roughly 1 in 4 say they aren't confident they can pay their bill in full this month.
  • Among people carrying credit card debt, 61% have been in debt for at least a year — and nearly half carry a balance every single month.
  • Most credit card debt doesn't start with overspending — it starts with an emergency. The most common cause cited is an unexpected expense: a medical bill, a car repair, a home repair.

Now breath!

Debt is common, and many of us still feel embarrassed talking about it.

We may have borrowed money to pursue an education, buy a home, start a business, support someone we love, or get through a difficult time. We may also have made financial decisions we wish we had made differently.

Thinking about what we owe can bring up shame, sadness, fear, anxiety, disappointment, or regret.

Debt can quietly follow us throughout the day. Each time we think about it, the self-judgment may begin:

I should have known better.

How did I allow this to happen?

I should be further ahead by now.

What if I can never repay it?

We may wake during the night imagining everything that could go wrong. We may fear that someone will discover how much we owe and judge us for it.

When shame becomes attached to debt, what we owe can begin to feel like evidence of who we are.

We may avoid opening statements, adding up the total, talking with our partners, or making a repayment plan.

Avoidance may give us temporary relief, while the shame continues.

Here is what  I invite you to remember: We are more than our debt, and we can create a different financial future.

During Rewire Your Financial Worry, we will explore the emotions, self-talk, and past experiences that may be shaping how we respond to our finances today.

My intention is to create a sacred, safe space where we can have honest conversations about our financial worries with care and without judgment.

Bring your financial worries.
