We have been having some heat waves here in Narberth, how about where you are? Hope you are keeping cool.

Last week I mentioned self-mastery, which  is the ability to consciously manage and regulate one's emotional and psychological states through techniques such as EFT tapping. The intention of self-mastery is to  cultivate greater emotional resilience, mental clarity, and a balanced sense of well-being, enabling one to respond to life's challenges with calm and confidence.

Managing one’s emotions is often the biggest challenge I hear from my clients including myself that I decided to focus on emotions today. 

 We are either in the state of having satisfied a present need which we experience as emotionally pleasurable, or we are in the state of being unsatisfied, which is emotionally painful- emotions communicate our levels of satisfaction or dissatisfaction …. Emotions play a crucial role in our lives, not just as feelings but as powerful drivers of action and communication. At their core, emotions involve a complex interplay of neurological, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and hormonal changes that prepare our bodies to act. We experience these changes as sensations like "butterflies" in the stomach or a "lump" in the throat and urges to cry, laugh, shout, or hide.

 

Emotions serve three primary functions:

  1. Communicate:
  • Our physical actions—facial expressions, body posture, breathing patterns—often communicate our emotions to others without words.
  • It's essential to appropriately express our feelings to elicit the desired responses from others, instead of hiding or misrepresenting them.
  • Motivate:
    • Emotions prepare us for action. The fight-or-flight response, for instance, readies us to confront or flee from danger.
    • Emotions like fear, anger, sadness, and love have evolved to drive us towards actions that ensure our survival and well-being.
  • Illuminate:
    • Emotions highlight what’s important, shining a light on our deepest needs and desires.
    • By tuning into our emotions, we can understand what truly matters to us and guide our actions accordingly.

    In summary, emotions are not just feelings to be experienced passively. They are vital tools that communicate, motivate, and illuminate. By acknowledging and wisely using our emotions, we can access a rich source of wisdom and guidance for our lives.
