Helen,

How much money would you need in savings to feel financially secure?

Perhaps enough to cover an unexpected car repair or medical expense without wondering where the money will come from.

Maybe it is three, six, or nine months of living expenses, so you could take time away from work or move through a change in your income without everything falling apart.

A 2026 Harris Poll for the AICPA found that one in four women has nothing set aside in savings or an emergency fund, compared with 17% of men.

Among people who have savings, the median amount is $5,000. Yet the median amount people believe would help them feel secure is twice that: $10,000.

There are practical reasons why saving can be difficult.

Sometimes, there simply is not enough money left after paying for housing, food, healthcare, childcare, debt, and everything else life requires. Your income may fluctuate. An unexpected expense may use the money you had begun setting aside. You may also be supporting people you love.

Saving can also have an emotional history.

Thinking about how much you have saved, or how little you have, may activate anxiety about what would happen if your circumstances changed.

Underneath that worry, you may find grief, sadness, anger, or memories of a time when you lost money, freedom, support, someone you loved, or a part of the life you wanted for yourself.

Your mind-body system may begin connecting savings with loss rather than security.

Looking at your savings can then feel painful. You may avoid checking the balance, delay making a plan, or decide to focus on it when you are earning more.

Savings can offer more than protection from an unexpected expense.

They can give you greater freedom to make choices based on what matters to you and the life you want to create.

What could become possible if you felt more secure about your ability to save?
